from 155 Euro

Description

This is an ideal tour for those who want to get away from the hectic pace of the city, to immerse themselves in nature, sampling the typical products of the area. In the morning a driver will take you to Pienza, where your guide will tell you the very special story behind the foundation of this village, a jewel of Renaissance architecture, conceived by Pope Pius II Piccolomini. After admiring the main square, where the cathedral and the Piccolomini palace stand, built in a very short time between 1459 and 1462, you will walk along narrow streets with romantic names, until you reach a panoramic terrace, with a breathtaking view of the Val d’Orcia, which has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2004, as an example of a well preserved cultural landscape, at the center you will see Mount Amiata, the natural border between the province of Siena and Grosseto. Leaving Pienza, you will drive through the Val d’Orcia, beautiful in every season with its changing colors, characterized by soft hills, rows of cypress trees, winding white roads and gullies, you will certainly be given the chance to stop to take some pictures of this landscape, which was used as a film set for famous movies, such as “The English Patient”, “The Gladiator” and recently for a television series about the Medici family starring Dustin Hoffman. The next stop will be at a farm that produces the famous pecorino cheese made in Pienza, where you will have the opportunity to taste this delicious fresh, seasoned or flavored cheese and discover the secrets of its production. In the afternoon you will move to San Quirico d’Orcia, a characteristic town in the Val d’Orcia, today off the beaten track, but in the past an important stop along the Via Francigena, a popular route for pilgrims, even the emperor Frederick Barbarossa made a stop in San Quirico. In the historical center you will find two beautiful Romanesque churches, the monumental 18th century Palazzo Chigi, as well as the Horti Leonini, a beautiful example of a typical Italian garden, with boxwood hedges that create geometric shapes and a hidden rose garden. At the end of the visit you will stop at a small brewery that overlooks the main street, there you will have the opportunity to see the production laboratory, taste their varied selection of beers, including one flavored with cocoa. Upon request it is possible to combine the beer tasting with a tasting of local salami.
